Tumbleweed Contessa and Company

By her daughter…..

My mom is too humble to brag about herself so I made this web page for her. She is a tough, smart, practical, West Texas Lady. She is the mother of two girls, one boy and two darling grandaughters. Her accomplishments and credits include Girl Scout leader, crafter, seamstress, laundress, gardener, master baker and self-taught chef. All of these accomplishments were inspired by the fact that she was a wife and mother first, foremost and always. In good times, bad times, rich times, poor times…..you get the idea. These “times” have caused her to call on her creativity and practicality to make the best of what was available. Rich lessons that were supplemented by her mother, grandmothers, friends and neighbors. She shares them freely, openly and upon request. If she really likes you, you will get something baked, breaded or hand-crafted.  She even took all the recipes and put them in a cookbook for her family. Actually, two cook books.

Volume I was created when I started college and was learning to cook myself. I was constantly calling on my schedule, not hers, to ask how to make something. These were recipes she had made a million times and knew by heart. So, she forgot things like cooking temperatures, important ingredients etc… Thus, precipitating the need for long awaited Volume 2, which to date, appears complete.

Volume 2 was in the works and in need of title when a heated e-mail debate about Thanksgiving side dishes occurred. You see, my mother passed on her stubborness to her children. Most of the time this is to her advantage, but occasionally she gets a taste of it herself. As a last ditch effort to get my mother off my case, I dubbed her the Tumbleweed Contessa (she still has the email, which will probably be stapled to her will.) She loved the title. She wasn’t done with me though. We received our copy of Volume 2 at Christmas the next year, aptly titled, “Recipes and Ramblings with the Tumbleweed Contessa.” And so, the Contessa, as we lovingly refer to her now, had the last word.

Those of you who are children of West Texas Ladies will laugh when I tell you that I initially typed Recipes and Rantings with the Tumbleweed Contessa as the title for the website. OOOPS! The second order of business is that my sister and I claimed the right to establish “Whatever Contessa” at the time of our choosing.

I know that everyone’s mother is the best cook, but my opinion has been validated by many a person, potluck and bake sale. I can’t tell you how many times I have made something that my mother shared with me and people have just gone nuts about it. The ideas are usually very simple, but so good.  She has given me recipes for crowds or just dinner, ideas for holiday gifts, tips for the garden and more. All of which have met with resounding success and welcome.   So world, here she is!

I too am a daughter & granddaughter of great West Texas women, I LOVE that you point THAT out!! :) Live in the big city now near Ft. Worth but my heart will always be in West Texas!! Cannot wait to try this casserole, as I had never heard of it (??!!) and I know have 4 kiddos myself, so it sounds like it will go over well in my house too! One of my grandmothers was the cafeteria manager at Abilene HS for 30 years…back when they cooked everything from scratch…talk about a GOOD cook!!! I miss her so much, she was a doll & thankfully she left me ALL her recipes (most large enough to feed 400+) which I cherish more than anything! Thank you for doing this site for your Mom, I can’t wait to dig in to her recipes!!
